Preview Roundups
March 21, 2017
Ottawa at Boston 7:00 PM ET
The Ottawa Senators lost a chance to take control of the Atlantic Division race over the weekend and now turn their attention toward securing a playoff spot when they visit the Boston Bruins on Tuesday. The Senators have gone four games without a victory (0-2-2), including overtime and regulation losses in a home-and-home series with first-place Montreal, and lead Boston by four points for second place in the Atlantic.
Pittsburgh at Buffalo 7:00 PM ET
The Pittsburgh Penguins hope recent history repeats itself Tuesday as they attempt to clinch a playoff spot with a road win over the Buffalo Sabres for the second time in three years. A victory, which would be its third straight, also could put Pittsburgh in the lead for the Presidents' Trophy.
NY Rangers at New Jersey 7:00 PM ET
The New York Rangers have lost touch with the top teams in the Metropolitan Division but maintain a firm grip on the top wild card as they prepare to visit the reeling New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night. New York continued its road prowess with a 3-2 win at Minnesota on Saturday but sits six points behind third-place Columbus in the Metropolitan.
Calgary at Washington 7:00 PM ET
Offseason acquisition Brian Elliott didn't turn many heads with his play to begin the season, but the veteran goaltender certainly has the league's attention now. With 11 consecutive victories under his belt, Elliott will look to eclipse Mike Vernon's franchise-record win streak on Tuesday as the red-hot Calgary Flames vie for their 13th triumph in 14 outings on Tuesday when they visit the Washington Capitals.
Detroit at Montreal 7:30 PM ET
After posting back-to-back victories against Ottawa over the weekend, the Montreal Canadiens look to extend their division lead over the Senators on Tuesday as they continue their six-game homestand versus the Original Six-rival Detroit Red Wings. Montreal owns a four-point advantage in the Atlantic Division after posting a 4-3 shootout win in Ottawa on Saturday and a 4-1 home triumph over the Senators a day later.
Arizona at Tampa Bay 7:30 PM ET
The Tampa Bay Lightning have hit a bump in the road during their quest for a playoff spot and look to get back on course when they host the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday. The Lightning earned points in 15 of 17 games (12-2-3) before allowing a total of 10 goals in back-to-back losses to Toronto and Washington, which have dropped them four points behind Toronto for the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.
Carolina at Florida 7:30 PM ET
Their fading playoff hopes jarred by a crushing defeat, the Carolina Hurricanes will attempt to rebound when they continue a four-game road trip with a visit to the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night. The Hurricanes and Panthers are tied with 73 points and trail the Toronto Maple Leafs by eight points for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference.
Philadelphia at Winnipeg 8:00 PM ET
Two teams looking to keep their faint playoff hopes alive meet Tuesday when the Philadelphia Flyers visit the Winnipeg Jets. The Flyers lost four of the previous five games before getting a much-needed 4-3 overtime victory over Carolina on Sunday but are seven points of a playoff spot, while the Jets won two in a row after Sunday’s win over Minnesota, but sit 10 points out of the postseason picture.
San Jose at Minnesota 8:30 PM ET
The Minnesota Wild have seen a seven-point lead atop the Central Division turn into a seven-point deficit after dropping eight of their 10 games in March. The reeling Wild look to snap a five-game skid on Tuesday when they open a three-game homestand against the San Jose Sharks.
Vancouver at Chicago 8:30 PM ET
The Chicago Blackhawks benefited from the contributions of a familiar face to clinch their ninth consecutive playoff appearance while the Vancouver Canucks' postseason aspirations have long since been dashed due in large part to an offense without an identity. Winners of five in a row and 17 of their last 20, the Blackhawks and captain Jonathan Toews look to continue their good fortune on Tuesday when they host the spiraling Canucks.
St. Louis at Colorado 9:00 PM ET
The St. Louis Blues kicked off March with their fifth straight defeat, a 3-0 loss at Winnipeg that opened a month featuring 10 of 15 games away from home. The Blues have regrouped to win seven of eight since that defeat as they prepare to wrap up a five-game road trip with a visit to the league-worst Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night.
