PHOENIX -- Four days ago, the Phoenix Suns were the NBA's punching bag after losing two of their first three games by 48 and 42 points.

However, with a new coach, a revamped lineup and a new attitude, they quickly found a counterpunch.

TJ Warren scored 20 of his 27 points in the second half, and the Phoenix Suns scored their second win in as many tries under interim coach Jay Triano, a 97-88 victory against the Utah Jazz on Wednesday.

The Suns (2-3) came in allowing an average of 125.3 points in their first four games, but they held the Jazz to 41.6 percent shooting, forced 24 turnovers and didn't allow a 30-point quarter.

"Today was a grind-out game. It's surprising; we haven't won many grind-out games," said Suns guard Devin Booker, who scored 17 points and was praised by Triano for his defensive effort. "Usually it's us outscoring the other team. Winning a low-scoring game was good to see."

Alex Len (13 points, 13 rebounds) and Tyler Ulis (13 points, five assists) led a strong effort by the Suns' bench, which outscored Utah's reserves 38-9 in the game, including 26-1 in the first half. Ten different Suns had at least one basket by halftime.

"Tyler had been playing very well, and tonight Alex comes in and just goes to the rim, goes to the rim, and when he does that, good things happen," Triano said. "I don't have a substitution pattern. ... If you want to stay in the game, play defense and work hard."

Phoenix has bounced back since coach Earl Watson was fired on Sunday and point guard Eric Bledsoe was sent home after saying he didn't want to be in Phoenix anymore.

"Four days ago, we were miserable after the 40-point losses and things like that," Ulis said. "Now we're running, we're out playing hard for each other and we're having a lot of fun."

Guard Rodney Hood returned from injury to score 22 points for Utah, which had beaten the Suns seven straight times but never led in Wednesday.

"They were the more aggressive team," Jazz coach Quinn Snyder said. "You saw it on the offensive glass (16-7 for Phoenix). You saw it getting to loose balls. ... Give them credit. We made a lot of mistakes offensively. At some point, you've got to know each other better than that."

Rudy Gobert added 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Jazz (2-3). Derrick Favors and Ricky Rubio scored 15 points apiece, with Rubio contributing 11 assists.

"We came out soft. They wanted this game more than we did," Gobert said. "They are playing free, and good things happen when you do that."

As with their Monday win over the Sacramento Kings, the Suns had a strong start. The defense forced seven early turnovers, and an early 10-2 Phoenix lead grew to 23-13 at the end of one quarter.

The Phoenix bench pushed the lead to 17 with an 11-2 run early in the second, as a Ulis layup made it 34-17 Phoenix.

Utah's starters returned and answered with a 14-3 run. Hood followed a 3-pointer -- the only one Utah made in 12 first-half tires -- with three free throws to pull the Jazz to within 43-40. The Suns led 48-41 at the break.

The Suns used an 18-5 run to take control in the third quarter, forcing seven more Jazz turnovers. A Josh Jackson slam stretched the lead to 71-51 with 3:04 left.

Utah crept back with 89-81 with three minutes remaining, but a Booker 3-pointer with 1:29 to go ended the late threat.

"We tried to claw our way back into it, but it was just too hard because we were turning the ball over," Hood said. "When you turn it over against a team that is playing loose, the game is a lot harder."

NOTES: The Suns lost F Marquese Chriss to a sprained left ankle in the fourth quarter, but we was walking on it in the dressing room and said he felt OK. ... Jazz G Rodney Hood (left leg strain) returned to action and started, with G Donovan Mitchell moving back to the bench. ... At his first full practice Tuesday, Suns interim coach Jay Triano installed some new offensive plays and made some defensive tweaks, stressing the team continue to push the tempo but play more under control to cut down on turnovers. "We added some plays that I've kind of been sitting on and saved for a year," he said. "(The turnovers) were more fatigue and laziness than anything."... Triano became the 11th of 18 Suns coaches in franchise history to start his tenure with a win when Phoenix beat the Sacramento Kings 117-115 on Monday.
