DENVER -- After three innings Wednesday night, the New York Mets were trailing by five runs and their offense was nonexistent.

However, early deficits are considerably easier to erase at Coors Field, and the Mets used a three-inning flurry capped by a six-run sixth to beat the Colorado Rockies 10-5.

"You're never out of a game here," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "When you're down five, just think, 'Peck our way back.' And they did a great job of taking what they could get."

Jay Bruce hit his 29th homer in the fourth when the Mets scored two runs. Curtis Granderson hit a three-run shot that capped the big sixth and gave the Mets an 8-5 lead.

The win was only the second in seven games for the Mets, who trailed 5-0 after the Rockies struck for five runs in the third against starter Chris Flexen. Colorado's rally included six consecutive hits.

Flexen left the game after that inning with a blister on his right index finger, and the Mets' bullpen was virtually untouchable. Four relievers combined to hold the Rockies scoreless for six innings on three hits.

Chasen Bradford (1-0), who relieved Flexen and retired the six batters he faced, was awarded his first major league victory in his sixth career appearance.

Collins commended Bradford for throwing his four-seam fastball up in the zone to get the Rockies hitters off his sinker, a tactic Bradford said he wasn't focused on when he took the mound.

"No, but it helped," Bradford said. "Now that I've seen I can, I'm going to start using both zones more."

Rockies starter Tyler Chatwood (6-12) began with three perfect innings before the Mets scored twice in the fourth, added two in the fifth and drove Chatwood from the game in the sixth.

The big blow was Granderson's 14th home run of the season, a go-ahead wallop that finished Chatwood. The right-hander got 13 outs on ground balls but gave up seven hits and a career-high-tying eight runs (seven earned) in 5 1/3 innings, flaming out after his promising start.

He had to wait nearly 13 minutes in the fourth after plate umpire Kerwin Danley was hit in the left arm by a bounced pitch and had to leave the game. After that delay, Michael Conforto singled on Chatwood's first pitch.

Asdrubal Cabrera followed with a single, and the Mets scored when Yoenis Cespedes grounded into a double play ahead of Bruce's homer.

"It was a long break, no doubt about that," Chatwood said. "It's not really an excuse."

Granderson reached second on first baseman Mark Reynolds' error to open the fifth and scored when Amed Rosario tripled for his first career RBI in his second career game. Rosario bounced a ball over third base, just beyond the reach of Nolan Arenado, then showed his vaunted speed. He scored on a groundout.

"I really trust my legs," Rosario said through a translator. "As long as that ball is in front of me, I feel confident. I'm always trying to take an extra base."

The Mets sent 11 batters to the plate in the sixth inning, which began with Cabrera's single. Cespedes followed with a double that tied the score at 5.

Chatwood, who took the mound with a National League-leading 62 walks, then issued his only walk of the game to Bruce. Two batters later, Granderson drove Chatwood's 81st and final pitch -- a 94.4 mph fastball on an 0-1 count -- into the Mets' bullpen in right-center.

"It was the pitch we wanted to throw, We might have just gone in there one too many times," said Chatwood, whose woes continued at Coors Field, where he is 2-6 with a 6.75 ERA in nine starts.

Scott Oberg replaced Chatwood and gave up four consecutive two-out hits and two more runs that were plated by Conforto's single and Cabrera's double.

The Rockies' uprising against Flexen started with three consecutive one-out singles by DJ LeMahieu, Arenado and Reynolds, good for one run. Gerardo Parra drove in two more with his second double of the game, a drive to the gap in left-center field.

Carlos Gonzalez completed the scoring in both the inning and, as it turned out, the game for the Rockies when he belted a two-run homer to center, increasing the lead to 5-0. The home run was Gonzalez's seventh of the season, his first in 76 at-bats since June 20, and extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

Flexen's blister forced him out after he retired the next batter, leading to the Mets' highly successful bullpen parade.

"We pretty much faced a different guy every time we went to the plate," Gonzalez said. "It's hard. it's not that we can't do it, but tonight it didn't work."
